Gli Shamen si formarono nel 1984,cite-ref-am-2-0[2] ad mwfaAberdeen, in Scozia, come gruppo di mwfqrock psichedelico di stampo anni 1960.cite-ref-ps-3-0[3]cite-ref-4[4] I suoi membri fondatori sono Colin Angus (24/8/1961), Derek McKenzie (27/2/1964) e Keith McKenzie (30/8/1961), già compagni in un precedente gruppo, gli mwhgAlone Again Or, e il tastierista Peter Stephenson.cite-ref-am-2-1[2] Nell'arco della sua attività, il gruppo subirà molti cambi di formazione e soltanto Angus rimarrà l'unico membro permanente.

Dopo i primi EP e l'album d'esordio mwjaDrop, uscito nel 1987, gli Shamen assimilarono elementi rap e dance,cite-ref-ps-3-1[3]cite-ref-5[5] come confermano mwlqIn Gorbachev We Trust del 1989, primo album della nuova fase;cite-ref-ps-3-2[3] mwmgEn-Tact del 1990, il loro primo LP di successo (vendette centomila copie),cite-ref-ps-3-3[3] considerato da mwnwAllMusic uno degli album più importanti della nuova mwoamusica dance;cite-ref-6[6] e mwpqBoss Drum del 1992, che vide la partecipazione del mwpgrapper Mr. C e raggiunse il terzo posto della classifica britannica.cite-ref-7[7] Dal disco vennero estratti i singoli mwraLSI (Love Sex Intelligence), mwrqBoss Drum e mwrgmwrwEbeneezer Goode, inseritesi nelle zone alte delle classifiche di vari paesi.cite-ref-8[8]cite-ref-9[9]cite-ref-10[10]
